How to saw and pierce sheet metal

Here is a handy guide to sawing and piercing sheet metal.
Saw Frames and Blades

There are many brands of saw frames and everyone has their own favourite. So it is worth testing out different types to find the one that suits you.

One of the most important things to bear in mind is the depth of the frame as this will limit how far into the metal you can cut. The standard frames are 3″ depth but you can quite easily get frames that are 5″ and 6″ depth. The larger the frame, the harder it can be to control, so there is a trade-off to consider.
Saw blades also come in a variety of brands and again it is worth testing different types to find ones you like.

There are also a range of sizes – the smallest being 8/0 and the largest 8 – to cut different gauges of sheet. The table here shows the gauges to be cut by each blade size, along with the drill size needed for piercing work.
